In addition to everybody else's comments I thought I'd point out figlet
http://www.figlet.org/

(pretty sure it's in the repositories - apt-get install figlet
figlet-fonts or  similar - I'm not at an Ubuntu box at the moment)

Handy for making pretty motd screens dynamically....
