BTW: on my test machine I found out that if you "apt-get remove firefox"
the whole system (Gnome wise) craps out on a 'killall gnome-panel' or
reboot.

I thought, well I'll just remove the 4 updates and simply install
Firefox 2.x from the mozilla website. Easy enough to install FF 2.x from
Mozilla, *not* so easy/wise to remove "Ubuntu's Firefox". Seems that
Ubuntu has used FF as a meta package:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  firefox firefox-gnome-support gnome-app-install gnome-core
  gnome-desktop-environment gramps-help mozilla-mplayer yelp

I ended up having to reinstall the infamous ubuntu-desktop to get things
working again.
