mysql stupidity

I've installed a lamp server manualy a few weeks ago.
What i wanted was a local toolkit to play around with joomla.

with phpmyadmin I added myself as user. and then deleted the root user.
Somehow i can't get into the database...
the next error apears on myadmin and on the shell.

Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
same error with my name in there.

I've tried reinstalling mysql but that did not help.

any ideas?
