whats wrong with ubuntu's packages

That sounds like a problem that you try to install packages from the
normal i386 repository, but installed the amd64 version from DVD.

I guess this should not happen at all, but it is not unheard of.

Can you copy your /etc/apt/sources.list to us and descibe which
version/flavour (32bit/64bit) of ubuntu you are using?
