I have a similar setup of beryl in ubuntu edgy. Works fine with the 
onboard intel chipset (i915). There's some startup problem with 
gdesklets but that's about it.

In gdm I had gdesklets start on reboot, however in beryl even though it 
is still defined in the startup sequence it doesn't come up. However, a 
manual start (clicking on the icon in applications) gets it up and 
running perfectly.
