Gutsy will not hibernate or reboot

Since installing Gutsy 2 weeks ago,  I cannot hibernate or reboot the 
computer.  Both functions lock up after starting into the sequence.  
They get as far as returning to the text screen.  I used to be able to 
do these things with Feisty.  The only thing I can do now is just shutdown.

What log files should I look in and what am I looking for?  I'm hoping I 
can simply reinstall something to fix this. :-)
