No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found

I was also having trouble with audio, after upgrading. I had also 
installed a bunch o' mplayer stuff on the recommendation of a Perfect 
Desktop article. YMMV, of course, but after a week of pfutzing around 
with sound variables, I de-installed the mplayer, and re-installed the 
default totem-gstreamer stuff (search in Synaptic for totem) and sound 
works again.
