Welcome John.

It is great that Ubuntu runs on so many systems now. Of course, it is
not perfect, but then, neither are we humans. :)

To know what the system logs are telling you and how to read them, I
would suggest a little reading first. A good start would be:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxLogFiles

This is specific to Ubuntu, and will get you most of the answers you
seek.

I can´t begin to tell you why the log opened and closed rapidly without
more information. You see, we have have several versions of Ubuntu, and
each has different viewers, editors, desktops, etc. These all operate
differently. If, after reading the above and trying what is discussed,
you are still having difficulty, please let the list know. Provide
details such as the version, desktop, program, what you did to attempt
to read, and we will try to help you out further.
