Sound like X is not configured right. The refresh rates may be out of
range. Check the specs on your CRT, if your not running a LCD and make
sure VertRefresh and HorizSync rates are correct in xorg.conf under
Section "Monitor". See man xorg.conf. This doesn't seem to matter much
for LCDs. The refresh rate usually declines as resolution is increased.
Make a backup copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reconfigure with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
if you cannot resolve with a manual edit of xorg.conf.
Are you running the OSS driver, nv or the proprietary NVidia driver?
