laptop: LCD gets annoyingly dark, overrides user's choice

Ubuntu 7.10 on ThinkPad T60, using the proprietary ATI drivers.

When running on batteries, after a short idle time, the LCD gets very 
dark. I thought I could change that with the power manager applet, I 
un-selected the "dim display when idle" option. But no luck, the LCD 
still gets dark, overrides the brightness level I configured manually, 
which is very annoying.

Any solution?
