Just install smartmontools, and ran "sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep 
Load_Cycle_Count"  and my result came back as 177874.  I am using an IBM 
  Thinkpad Z60t, that has an 80gb Toshiba HD.  By contrast, my IBM 
ThinkCentre Desktop (acting as a Web Server) has 8473 Power-on hours, 
and only 173 power cycle counts.  It is Running Ubuntu Server 6.06. I 
have a 76gb WD Raptor in it.
