problem with sound on Compaq Presario C500

shubi - thanks for your response!
actually the sound was working after the first install....then when I
switched to XP
and back it dissapeared. I also saw alsamixer, it doesn't look mute to
me......i can't tell.
there are 5 bars named "Master", "PCM", "IEC958" (blank), "Ext Mic", Int
mic"
There's a "00" under each bar except PCM.
All bars are set close to 100, except IEC 958 which has no bar.
Can you tell me what's wrong? Is there a way to change setting here
that i'm missing?
