sound goes off/on if I change OS to XP and back

I have a dual boot on my Compaq Presario C500. And
the sound sometimes comes on un Ubuntu, and sometimes
it doesn't...but normally its going off or on is triggered by
my changing the OS to Windows XP and then booting
back into Ubuntu Gutsy.

I went into the Phoenix BIOS but couldn't find anything
that had to do with the soundcard. It is HDA Intel ICH7 rev01.
My alsamixer also works fine, but no sound...

Please help!
