internet connection.

i have been haveing all kinds of issues getting ubuntu to connect to the net i had 6.0 and got rid of that and downloaded 7.10 now same as before when i look at network tools all it shows is an IPv6 address. I am going through an ambit cable modem from charter cable. i am totally new to open sourse can some one assit me in getting connected to the internet.
