is there any port i should open for synaptic ( to get updates/softwares ) ?

If Firefox works then Synaptic should work. Try doing your commands in a
terminal (e.g. "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get install foobar"
Synaptic is just a front end for APT. APT downloads files via http
(port 80) or ftp (port 21). Firefox does this as well. Therefore ports
aren't your problem in this case..
It sounds to me like a problem with the mirror you are using (if so, try
another) or the configuration of your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
