Hi Janice

Something I've noticed on a number of ubuntu systems to date is that although 
the master volume can be up high, the pcm volume can be set to zero. When 
this happens you don't hear anything. Raising it in accord with the master 
volume helps for those systems. You need to open the volume control to access 
it. I use ubuntu (not kubuntu) and right click on the speaker icon in the 
tray and choose open volume control to acess these settings. Hope this helps
