When you set up the network, in System|Administration|Network after you
set up the card click on the General tab. There you will find host settings:

Host name: <name of your machine>
Domain name: <windows workgroup name>

So if your Windows workgroup is named 'workgroup', then enter
'workgroup' in the Domain name section.

After you get a working network connection (can ping other machines,
network interfaces, internet etc), install SAMBA so that you can browse
the windows network & the windows network can browse you. Note: you will
need to set up accounts on both Windows and Ubuntu for browsing & file
sharing privileges, just as you do in a windows only network.
