Do the following...
#> mii-tools -v
(push the reset button on modem from ISP if any or restart modem)
#> /etc/init.d/networking restart
#> ifconfig -a
#> cat /etc/network/interfaces

Andrew, These are the results of the commands. It is strange that I am
able to run them on a remote machine (on my local network). I am just
learning all of this. Actually all this started when I was trying to
figure out how to use my computer when away from home. Anyway, I am
learning little by little.
