Ubuntu 7.10, Dell Inspiron 1420N and Display

Hello All,
I have an Inspiron 1420N that I purchased pre-packaged with
Feisty-Fawn. The software update showed up a few days ago and I blindly
clicked on it before I realized it was an OS upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10.
Everything seems to be working fine except my display driver which has some
hiccups during startup and finally goes to a default 'plug-and-play'
configuration. The display looks fine but the stuttering start and the fear
of running the display at the incorrect frequencies concerns me.

I have been using linux for a long time but the last time I configured X for
linux I used the xf86config command. I did a cursory search last night and
see that there is an xft- something command. I've been searching on the
internet for the configuration settings (my suspicion is that 7.10 will work
fine, once I get the correct settings) to set for my Intel/Nvidia graphics
combo with a LCD display.
Does anyone know where I might find some information on the new mechanism
for configuring the displays in Ubuntu? The graphical tools are not saving
the configuration or the configuration is incorrect and it's not taking
(though it's the configuration from the Dell tech specs).

Thanks in advance for your help.
