Nothing plays DVDs in Ubuntu Gutsy?

Applications | Add/Remove | Show: All available... |

Seach DVD - add VLC

You can also add Mplayer but VLC should do it.

Then: System | Preferences | Removable Drives and Media | Multimedia |
Video DVD Disks | replace totem with vlc

Put the DVD back in the drive & it should bring up vlc and the DVD
should then play fine.
