[UBUNTU] bottom panel

Hello 
I am new to this forum and Ubuntu ;-)

After some playing my bottom panel does look strange ;-(

It shows the arrows left & right plus the desktop & Trash applets!
The started 3 applications are displayed too !!

But about left half of the panel is (wasted) empty and 
I do not know why and how to change !!!

Your hints are very welcome ;-)
