Really dumb complaint - we hate the light- brown desktop at the start!

Just installed a clean Gutsy, everything went perfectly. However, we
really dislike the light brown initial desktop in Gnome. We tried
everything - set the desktop to black, set the login screen to plain
and the colour to black etc etc, however, every time you log in you
see this crappy brown for up to a minute until your own settings kick
in. Is there any way we can finally get rid of it? We're minimalist I
guess, just want black for the desktop + whatever picture we use for a
background.
