Really dumb complaint - we hate the light- brown desktop at the start!

You may change the login window face to a customized window by changing the
style property on Local tab (System->Administration->Login Window) to plain
(or plain with face browser, if you like it).
Doing it, you'll be able to choose a picture to be loaded before enter the
username and password, and you will also be able to change the Ubuntu Logo
showed on the login window. I did it here, and it looks much better.
You can also search on the net for other customized themes. I'm sure there
are lots of them to download out there.
