Gutsy boot problem

It freezes as soon as the Grub screen (the one with the various boot options) is cleared. In previous versions, the system will either present a Kubuntu boot animation or start scrolling a series of boot messages before finally starting X and a display manager. It seems that the screen is backlit rather than being totally blank, but nevertheless the system is frozen.
If it is a module problem, how can I figure out which one and then how can I either modify or prevent it from loading?
