Make sure you are using the 7.04 version of Ubuntu known as Feisty
Fawn, before attempting the beryl guide below.

* Note depending on your hardware or more importantly the graphics
chip will depend on how well beryl/compiz works. I.E Nvidia and intel
seems to work well, but I believe ATI has issues at current (although
that will change next year hopefully due to the AMD, ATI
announcement).
