OK, I've done a bit of experimenting now, although using Thunderbird on
Windows as I don't have a Linux install handing right now :(
The answer seems to be a conditional yes. The condition seems to be that
you have had some interaction with the folder since you connected to the
mail server (all this is IMAP based btw).
I have just hooked up and watched a couple of folders I know get
regular mail filed to them and they haven't changed. A couple of other
folders that also get regular mail have changed, but those I have
checked since starting Thunderbird.
This is emphasised by the fact that I've just move a few junk mails into
my spam folder (I've been filing it with a view to filter training, but
not got around to it yet!), and shortly afterward Thunderbird started
checking for new mail in the folder - it came up with 22,318, and I've
not actually been into the folder yet - so filing mail seems to class as
interaction too.
I suspect that if you subscribe to the folders you want to check this
would work too, but that brings you back to needing to subscribe to them
all if you want to check them for new mail! I don't see an option to
automatically check all folders. For me this works well since I don't
want to check all folders, in fact I generally don't even want to check
the folder I'm looking in as my primary client is Mutt and I only want
to read one particular email without messing up my New, Old and Read
count!
