Creating an xorg.conf file on the fly

I have seen xorg start up successfully without an xorg.conf file.  I 
think xorg has the ability to probe for itself.  There may also be an 
ubuntu script to help create the initial file.

One thing to try is remove your xorg.conf file, and start x, then look 
at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what xorg probed for and found.
