operation of file copy is very slow

Copy operation is very slow on my Ubuntu laptop. It
takes 13 mins to copy 574M bytes file from usb flash
card to my hard disk. But copy is pretty fast when I
use fedora 5 on my laptop.

I think I do not partiotion smartly when I install
ubuntu. I partition two parts. One 2 GB bytes for swap
and 38 GB for root. But it seems not work smartly.

Any idea for helping operation fast?
