I'm just a newb throwing something out that happened to me, so please
just disregard if I'm out of line or not on the same page as you...

but did you happen to use Envy or a similar program to install your
nvidia driver? If so, you'll have to reconfigure X to use the mesa or
vesa drivers so you can boot back into X and reinstall the driver...
