Try installing "Xubuntu" - but use the so-called "alternate" installer.
128 MB RAM is not really enough for a full Ubuntu install, but Xubuntu
gives you equivalent functionality without being as demanding, by using
lighter applications and desktop programs.
You can get the alternative ( text based) installer for Xubuntu here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/gutsy/release/
Choose this link:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/gutsy/release/xubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso
Or for a closer mirror try:
http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs-Xubuntu/7.10/release/
http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs-Xubuntu/7.10/release/xubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso
If that also stalls, there are other ways - for example, you can install a
text-mode command line system, then issue the command
sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
... but I would try the suggestions above first.
Another lightweight alternative is "Fluxbuntu" - see :
