OpenID server

I have sort of a complicated setup here, so bear with me:
We have an existing network setup that uses NIS for local authentication.
The NIS server is running Solaris.
I will be making a Drupal site that should have an account for every account
on the local network.
Drupal supports authentication through OpenID and LDAP, in addition to its
internal ones.
The Drupal site is on a server running Ubuntu.
The web server could be made into a NIS client (but is not yet).

My thought was to make the web server that the Drupal site is on also an
OpenID provider, using accounts gathered through being a NIS client.  My
first question is, can OpenID integrate with NIS?  I _think_ it would be
transparent, such that if it works with local accounts it will work through
NIS ones, but just thought I'd check if anyone knew otherwise.  Second then,
what can I install to make Ubuntu an OpenID provider?
