Problems with upgrading and VirtualBox

Last week I upgraded to 7.10 beta from 7.06 release, using the gui tools. During the installation I was asked whether I wanted to upgrade virtualbox-ose yet, since in doing so I would lose my snapshots. I took the chance to not do it yet, and go through my snapshots and see if I actually wanted any.

Came to do an apt-get upgrade a day or so later, and virtualbox comes up with an error I can no longer replicate whenever I try to start a machine saying words to the effect of "the virtualbox support module is not the same version as the core"; it suggested a reinstall would fix it.

I tried reinstalling through Synaptic, but to no avail.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling virtualbox-ose through apt-get, but that didn't do much either - same error as before.
I uninstalled virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-14-generic then reinstalling both, but now I get the error:

VirtualBox kernel driver not installed. The vboxdrv kernel module was
either not loaded or /dev/vboxdrv was not created for some reason.
Please install the virtualbox-ose-modules package for your kernel, e.g.
virtualbox-ose-modules-generic..

My kernel is definitely 2.6.22-14-generic. lsmod doesn't show vboxdrv, and I can't modprobe it either (module not found).

I'm a bit stumped for ideas now. I don't particularly need anything from a newer VirtualBox, but I do rely fairly heavily on having it for Work.
I'm a bit perplexed as to where I went wrong in the update process, too...

I'm guessing an apt-get uninstall --purge would clear it enough for a fresh install to work, but I'd rather like to keep the configuration files - that is much of the point of upgrading rather than replacing...
