Tag-based File Manager?

Hi all,
I really like the tagging system used in Googleland, and I was wondering if
there's a way to do it on my desktop.
I guess I could install Google Desktop or something like that, but I would
like to use tools and features of the Desktop Manager itself...
I am running Kubuntu 7.10.
I have a separate 160GB SATA hard drive containing all of my Multimedia
files on a single ext2 partition.
I currently set it up in two directory hierarchies:
One called Data: where all files are stored divided into 0-9 and a-z
subdirectories.
Second called Artwork congaing subdirectories by type - i.e.: Audio, Video,
eTexts etc. - wach divided to 0-9 and a-z subdirectories. This hierarchy
contains symbolic links to the actual files stored in the firs hierarchy.
My general idea is to find a way to conserve disk space and find the files
quickly and make it available in a console through SSH. This is the best way
I could think of.
Any pointers / comments / new ideas?
Thanks!
