sounds like you are learning the basics, you'l be better off looking at 
how to install - step by step guides on various web pages or perhaps in 
your
book.

i think you need to burn your ubuntu file as an iso "image" and not just 
data
maybe you need to use the right program

then you have to tell your PC to "boot from CD" find out how to do this

the CD will then be able to write over any OS you already have on your PC
and install a great one! ubuntu-7.10    :0P
