Can't pin down DVD no mount problem

G'day there One & All,

I recently bit the bullet and removed all trace of Vista from my
laptop. I've installed Hardy from a magazine cover DVD, without problem.
I got it all set up with the settings I want and tried to watch a DVD a
couple of nights ago. Unfortunately I've spent from then till now
searching the 'net and trying without success to get it to work. I've
not found the exact situation I currently experience, and don't know
exactly where to look for clues.

If I boot from a DVD or CD the drive works fine, so the problem
doesn't lie in the hardware. I can mount CDs, although it's a bit of a
slow process. Bunging a DVD into the drive causes the usual mounting
noises as it tries to read, but after a time it stops and there's
nothing on the desktop.

    If I open a terminal and enter "sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0
/media/cdrom0" I get "mount: No medium found" along with the obligatory
noises from an attempt to read the drive. There is no entry for the
drive in the "Places" menu (I'm using Gnome). The result is the same if
I use "udf" instead of "iso9660".

If I open the "Computer" entry in the same menu there is an icon for
the drive. Double clicking gives a dialog with "Unable to mount
location. No media in the drive". Right click and select "Mount Volume"
does nothing. Opening the Totem movie player and using the "Movie" menu
sometimes shows a greyed out entry for the drive, and sometimes doesn't
have anything. It never shows my DVDs.

Here are some of the results I get from various commands:

less /etc/fstab:

    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=fafa2978-b809-46da-ac1b-c30650631231 /               ext3
    relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=150508f4-9889-4fbc-aac3-df867efcd35e none            swap
    sw 0 0
    /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8
    0 0
    # /dev/dvd /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8
    0 0

root at Epona:~# lsmod | grep cdrom

    cdrom 37408 1 sr_mod

After trying the Totem method I found:

dmesg | grep dvd or scd0 or cdrom have no results
dmesg | grep CDROM gives line after line of:

[31814.490389] sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in
    the drive.

then line after line of:

[31815.599625] sr0: CDROM not ready yet.

followed by:

[32467.284790] sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in
the drive.

at the end.

At one time I kept getting something to the effect the drive
couldn't connect to the HAL Daemon. That seems to have stopped though
but I don't know why.

Does anyone pleaes have any ideas that I can try? or know where I
should look?

Thanks for listening,
