Xine cannot start a sound manager

Often when I try to use an application with sound (Firefox with Flash
plugin, Amarok, Skype) I find that my system has no sound. The volume
sliders are all up and enabled, and the system is not muted. When this
happens, I can start Amarok and get this message (translated):
Xine cannot start any of the sound managers.

I am using Kubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron E1505. Thanks in advance
for any troubleshooting advice.
