cannot find add/remove program in application

Synaptic isn't in the Applications menu but in the system menu. Try

System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager

Also you can check to see if they've been unchecked in the menu's via

System --> Preferences --> Main Menu

When in here highlight the line reading Applications on the left and look to 
the bottom on the right. Does Add/Remove have a tick next to it? If not 
re-tick it. If synsptic is not showing in the system menu you can follow 
through on the left through System and then Administration and look on the 
right to see if it is ticked and re-tick if not
