problems with ubuntu startup

I don't think you are doing anything wrong at all. Your computer on
the other hand isn't cooperating :-)
It sounds like it's having difficulties picking the right
configuration to run your monitors and video cards.
After you boot from the CD and choose your language, hit the F4 key to
bring up a little option menu, and choose 'safe graphics mode'
If that doesn't work, post back with info about your hardware, esp video card.
