I do not see how this can have an impact on NFS performance.  Can you
cite a reference, please? All the automounter does is make an NFS mount
call. Once the share is mounted, it remains mounted until it gets timed
out due to inactivity, then it is unmounted. You can always set the
timeout to zero in which case the share will never get unmounted which
is effectively the same as putting the share in the /etc/fstab file.

I have automounted home directories routinely without suffering any
performance degradation.  automount is also useful in large environments
where automount maps are kept in NIS or LDAP.  It makes remote
filesystem management much simpler.
