Totem

How or what do I need to do to get Totem movie player to work. I have
become a newcomer to Linux & need detailed assistance if at all
possible. I recorded a movie from the TV and it will not play the movie.
Windows has no problem with it. I can even put in a store-bought DVD &
Totem will play it partially, but hardly at all. Do you people out there
actually "talk" to each other on the telephone or is it all by email?
Please advise.
