Feisty KDE mouse of lines

sometimes in feisty when I run KDE in place of the mouse pointer I get a
square box made of verticle lines.  This occurs whether I use an
external mouse or the mouse pad.  Its a Sony Vio laptop.  Is this a bug
or a config error?
