You can run KDE applications in Ubuntu. Kubuntu is basically a distro 
that runs the KDE visual environment instead of GNOME (default with Ubuntu).

With the libraries installed you can run Ubuntu or Kubuntu applications.

You should be able to "switch" by choosing a different window manager at 
login time (a different session); I haven't tried this so someone else 
on the list will have to elaborate...

I don't know what you were asking about "similar" applications for 
Linux, but there are replacement/equivalent lists on the Internet. 
Google for something like "list linux replace windows applications" 
should give you results.
