Hmm, quick google search, untested
Check your /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config file.
if allowed_users=rootonly, then change it to allowed_users=console
I'm assuming you are at the computer... by default, you aren't allowed
to start X as a user logged in remotely.. (which is a good idea, there
should be no reason to start X remotely as a user.)
