twinview, nvidia, and tv-out

Hi all,
I am trying to output video via the s-video port on my laptop. According to
this thread:
"Howto setup twinview tv-out and compiz (nvidia)"
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4929070
It is simply a matter of plugging in the tv screen (or, in my case, the LCD
projector) and running nvidia-settings. According to that page, it is
basically a matter of running nvidia-settings with the output device
connected:
[...]
5) from terminal run:
sudo nvidia-settings
6) It should show you your current display and a disabled TV display. Click
on the TV display and press configure. Then you should select TwinView
[...]
However, no matter what I do, nvidia-settings doesn't display a 2nd output
device.
Elsewhere on the Net, there are instructions for doing this by editing
xorg.conf directly, ie:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/NVidia/TV-OUT
but I haven't tried that yet. What is the best way to go about doing this?
Thanks.
