And announcing a <PLONK> was always considered both rude and childish.
If you are going to <PLONK> someone just do it silently and be done with it.
As for "experts" I would consider Oliver Grawert to be in that category:
https://launchpad.net/%7Eogra/+projects
and he is, in my biased opinion, quite kind to participate on this list
and offer suggestions. I suspect that there are other "experts" on this
list who do the same on occassion.
I am not sure just what has given you cause to become so upset, but if
it is something that I have said or done my email address works...
The issue of the thread going on as it has is that Michael clearly
jumped to conclusions regarding the OP's unsubscribe post (which by the
way was tagged onto an existing thread: "Command line usenet client?").
Unfortunately, even after provided proof that his post was most likely
unfounded, Michael neither acknowledged the fact, nor even bothered to
offer a simple mea culpa in return.
This list, as I understand it, is indeed a community of individuals;
most of whom spend much of their time attempting to assist others with
issues regarding Ubuntu.
As with any list community there are some who can be caustic,
impolite, and rude. There also will be times when someone (myself very
much included) offer a suggestion that is just plain wrong. When this
happens, the polite thing to do is fess up and admit that you've offered
bad advise, misunderstood, or were just plane in the ozone on that
response. There will also be times when even the most polite person on a
list just has a bad hair day and responds in a "why can't you see that
what you are doing is wrong". That is human and certainly something that
you must encounter regularly in your particular line of work...
Folks tend to forget that the '"X"perts' and other non-Xperts on this
list not only try to assist, but often are quite willing to look up bug
reports, contribute to bug reports, install and test an application that
someone is asking about, and spend hours (sometimes days) assisting
others on this list. When 'they' and nobody else replies to a post that
they/we/you don't have an answer for 'they' get blasted because there
was no response.
I can guarantee you that if you look through the archives on this list
you will find several posts by me asking for assistance on something
that I didn't receive a response to. Does that make me upset? No. It
just means that nobody here had an answer, and rather than waste my time
by replying "I don't know" they've spared others on the list the
bandwidth by replying that way.
Regarding rules etc.; when someone points to someone to the etiquette
page (as even you have done) it isn't to be a list nanny or a "I'm
running this list". It is specifically done for the purpose of
maintaining the list community and order. Perhaps a better way to do
this would be to publish a list FAQ on a regular basis on the list. But
most folks reckon that if you've found your way to a list such as this
instead of using the available forums, that you should understand: 1)
what a mailing list is, and 2) be able to read and comprehend:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users
"To unsubscribe from ubuntu-users, get a password reminder, or change
your subscription options enter your subscription email address"
when they subscribe in the first place.
You have certainly received help on this list have you not? I know that
I have and very much appreciate the assistance received. In the spirit
of opensource & Ubuntu I've attempted to give back by contributing my
time to this and similar lists. However, the comments and attitudes
provided by yourself and the Michael's & Res's have given me cause to
rethink whether such efforts are worthwhile. On that note I'll leave any
further responses regarding this thread to the dissenters...
