Firefox 3 turns grey in Ubuntu 8.04

And this just happened - firefox tuning grey and not responding to any
input, on an amd64 hardy system, fully updated. I've just had a flurry
of problems with firefox 3.0 lately - and I don't run very many
plugins - I have amazing media browser, flashplugin-nonfree and
nspluginwrapper (which throws a lot of error-looking output on the
controlling terminal, mostly gtk-related).

I normally don't have problems with any specific stuff like flash -
youtube videos, cnn videos and sundry all load up and play,
mplayer-plugin handles most all the audio content (radio stations for
example). It's just that firefox has had trouble in the last few days,
when previously I had nary a problem with it.
