hardy, and usb drives, does anyone have one that works?

It's possible that's affecting it. Depends on power draw or possible
problems on the USB bus. But you said the liveboot sees the drives on
that computer.
I'd try shutting the machine down, disconnect ALL USB devices from it
(unless you're using a USB keyboard/mouse), boot it up, and try the
drives and see if they pop up.
Other things to check out would be things like lsusb's output (to see if
they're seen on the USB bus once connected), and grep through the logs
to see what the logs say about connected USB devices.
The fact that it's working with the liveboot CD on that machine would
say that something else in your configuration is interfering with the
recognition of the drives...
