Michael,

thank you for the comment.  I was highly doubtful that this was an
Ubuntu or ESX issue.  I'm suspecting something more of a MS forward to
Bind9 thing.  But not sure why it's working with the SLES machines on
9.3.4 (I believe).

Are you running an AD setup with the local MS DNS servers forwarding
on to the Ubuntu DNS server for queries out to the internet?

My setup is very generic.  Installed 8.04 LTS, apt-get full-upgrade to
get the new bind9 patch and other goodies.. .then released it to the
wild with the named.conf from the old server.  Worked like a charm.
