failed installation with 256 MB RAM

Thanks to everyone who
helped. I am (clearly) not a computer expert, but I do try not to ask too stupid
questions… And Karl, I didn't "choose not to" explain, I just live in
another part of the world and was sleeping at the time!

I tried a few options, like NoOp's
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromWindows,
but I got some sort of problem every time. Then I decided to change strategy
and install Xubuntu like Steven suggested, after burning the live CD iso and
booting it from within Windows. It was supposed to only need 192 MB memory to
install, but it still warned me that it needed 256, which is the maximum I had,
and that the installation might fail for that reason. I chose to try it anyway,
and it seems to be working! It's taking a while, but I figure it's partly
because the available memory is so adjusted, and partly because my USB port is
slow (1.0).

I'll come again if I get any more problems…

Thanks a lot guys.

AMB
