Master boot record error

Hello, all.

I am new to Ubuntu. I installed it on a Compaq desktop along with Windows XP operating system; the PC has two hard disks, one for each operating system. My problem is that I get a message error when starting: "Master boot record error". Then I get the booting selection window (operating systems options). By now, I have not had problems when logging in Windows, but when I try Ubuntu, I am successful only logging in into GNOME safeboot. Could anyone help me identifying if there is a way to fix the boot record. If so, please be patient and give me a detailed procedure (I am not so expert) on how to find the problem and how to fix it.
